BMW is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. because they are equipped with airbag inflators that can explode, potentially leading to serious injury or death.
If the inflator explodes, it may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, causing serious harm.
The recall includes certain 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan and 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon vehicles, with BMW dealers inspecting and replacing airbag modules for free.
No accidents or injuries related to this issue have been reported in the U.S. According to the NHTSA, owner notification letters are set to be sent on Aug. 23.
