My Boss Is a Total Grifter. I'm the Only One Who Sees It.
"Well, it's become increasingly clear to me that Ryan is just a total fraud. He is completely checked out and does no work. Our company has mandatory weekly 1:1s between managers and their direct reports, and my ones with him are a joke. He waits for me to tell him what I'm doing, I tell him, and then he's like OK sounds great, keep it up, and the meeting is over."
"He periodically presents in all hands meetings about what we're doing, and I don't know where he pulls this stuff from, but it's pure theatre and devoid of fact or substance. After the first time, I thought, oh they're going to fire him, but it just keeps happening. I don't know how he gets through his own 1:1s with the VP-he has no idea what we're doing!"
A company reorganization led to layoffs that included the writer's manager; the writer kept their role and was assigned a new manager named Ryan. Ryan appears disengaged, contributes no meaningful work, and conducts superficial weekly 1:1s that merely echo the writer's updates. Ryan delivers theatrical, fact-free presentations at all-hands and seems unaware of team activities. The writer resents Ryan's salary and job security while former hardworking coworkers remain unemployed. The writer refuses to pursue firing Ryan and seeks ways to manage persistent anger while staying because leaving is not feasible.
