He is using downtime to grow his business, Kentucky Hop Water, train for marathons, and bartend for income while hoping to secure full-time work. Recent labor data showed anemic job growth in August, a June decline, and in July slightly more unemployed workers than job openings for the first time since 2021. Wage growth and remote-work postings have cooled, and job growth has concentrated in a few industries such as healthcare. Economists call the market unusual and slow-growing but not yet a recession, and suggest part-time work, entrepreneurship, or temporary jobs as options for job seekers.
