Maryam Guerrab, a Harvard student and daughter of Algerian immigrants, aims to utilize her education and experiences to advocate for marginalized communities. She focuses on political economy, driven by her firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by immigrant and working-class families. Despite her initial hesitance about being accepted to Harvard, the support from her parents encouraged her to apply. Guerrab's journey reflects her commitment to public service and her determination to leverage education as a tool for social justice.
Public service work is incredibly important to me, I think in large part because of how I grew up. I come from a large immigrant family whose parents are both blue-collar workers.
I thought that studying government, learning more about the local and economic institutions that shape the world we live in today, informing how many people lead their lives and the problems they face, would be the best way to advocate for people's rights.
