Grace Hern moved to Canada in 2023 to pursue graduate studies and escape the political climate in the U.S., feeling increasingly fearful about potential legal changes in her home country. The overturning of Roe v. Wade marked a turning point for her, prompting her to search for a more stable environment with better healthcare rights. Having encouraged friends to consider moving too, Hern hopes to act as a guide for family and friends contemplating immigration. Despite recognizing Canada’s rising nationalism, she feels optimistic about her new life.
When I started telling my friends I was moving to Canada, they were like, "Maybe we should think about that, too." It surprised me a little bit.
I thought it was an extreme decision, that it was kind of crazy, but everybody I talked to was like, "Huh, I wonder if that's feasible for me."
