Engage the child in conversation if they show curiosity or ask questions about traumatic events. Let their questions guide the discussion. Look for changes in behavior as not all children can verbalize their feelings.
Children may prefer nonverbal ways to express their emotions, like drawing, music, or art. Young children might need concrete activities to help them identify and share their feelings. Avoid bringing up traumatic events if the child shows no awareness or interest.
Tailor conversations about traumas to be developmentally appropriate based on the child's age. Reassure early elementary children of safety with simple examples. Respond to questions from upper elementary and middle school children about their safety.
