Two killed in Newark traffic crash Thursday evening
"The 33-year-old driver was identified by the coroner's bureau Friday as Anthony Andres Reynoza Monchez, of Hayward. The passenger was identified by the coroner's bureau as Luis Alberto Deras, 31, of Union City. The fatal crash happened about 5:28 p.m. Thursday on westbound Thornton Avenue near Hickory Street, police said. Upon arrival at the scene, police and Alameda County firefighters located a Toyota Prius that had crashed into a tree, causing the passenger to be ejected."
"Despite emergency medical efforts, both men succumbed to their injuries at the scene, police said. Police said the initial investigation indicated the driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road before crashing. Investigators were trying to determine if speed or some type of impairment were factors in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Traffic Sgt. Karl Fredstrom at karl.fredstrom@newarkca.gov or by phone at 510-578-4974. Information can also be provided anonymously via the Anonymous Tip hotline at 510-578-4965."
