Alex Ballantyne, who faced instability after aging out of foster care, found solace with his aunt and uncle in Altadena. This newfound home brought him a sense of belonging for the first time in years. However, the recent Eaton fire destroyed their house along with thousands of others. Despite losing most of his belongings, Ballantyne remains grateful for his family’s safety and appreciates the support from relatives as they navigate this new challenge together, reflecting on his earlier experiences of homelessness.
"This was the first time it felt like I was at a place where I was wanted and welcomed," said the former foster youth, now 25.
"When I was 18, I was homeless, walking around with a Lowe's box filled with my stuff. Compared to that, this has felt much easier, really."
"Though he lost almost all his clothes, possessions and mementos, he is simply glad that his family made it out safe."
