Lake Tahoe braces for first major winter storm of the season
"The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches,"
"For elevation above 6,500 feet ... we're looking for about 12 to 20 inches of snow with up to 2 to 3 feet along the peaks,"
"5 to 10 inches, maybe up to a foot for this kind of event,"
"The amounts that we're expecting in Mono County are higher, so we went ahead with the warning."
A major winter storm is expected to arrive in the Lake Tahoe area Monday, bringing heavy snow and strong winds. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Sierra peaks and warned of gusty winds that could bring down tree branches. Elevations above 6,500 feet could see 12 to 20 inches of snow, with up to 2 to 3 feet on the highest peaks. Snow on Donner Pass may reach 5 to 10 inches, possibly up to a foot. Lake level snow is expected at 1 to 3 inches. Mono County has a winter storm warning with up to 3 feet on higher peaks. The heaviest precipitation is forecast Monday evening into Tuesday morning. The storm follows the start of the new water year after a Sierra snowpack that measured 96% of average last spring.
