How large fires are altering the face of California's Mojave Desert

The blaze was the largest in a series of wildfires that have become increasingly common in this corner of the desert as climate change brings hotter, drier conditions and more extreme swings in precipitation.

But experts say it will grow more pronounced and threatens to transform California's iconic Mojave Desert, wiping out vestiges of human settlements and hastening the demise of threatened species.
