The first atmospheric river storm of the season is set to impact Northern California starting Wednesday, expected to bring the rainiest weather to the Bay Area in nearly nine months. Rain totals through the week may peak at around 9 inches in the Russian River watershed, potentially delivering 20% of the area's annual rainfall within a few days. This storm appears to be a significant kickoff to the winter rainy season, according to meteorologists.
According to Marty Ralph, director of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, this atmospheric river storm is anticipated to rank between 3 to 4 on their severity scale, indicating it may be one of the stronger storms we've experienced in a while. He noted that by focusing on just one or two large storms each season can really determine the overall water year, emphasizing the potential impact of this incoming system.
