After an 88-year-old dementia patient wandered away from the Rose Garden Residential Care Home and died from exposure, the owner and an employee were arrested and charged with elder abuse. Officials reported that the worker responsible for the patient fell asleep, leading to the man's absence for an extended period. He was found deceased several hundred yards from the facility while dressed inadequately for the cold. The facility has since been closed due to prior evaluations and safety concerns regarding resident care.
"Elders deserve care, respect, and protection. Those who are responsible for the care of elderly and dependent adults carry a profound duty to ensure their safety and well-being."
The worker caring for the man had fallen asleep and was unaware he was missing. After leaving the facility, the man wandered nearly a half-mile in only a T-shirt and diaper.
