Authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man, Kevin Alexander Carlson, for intentionally starting the fire that devastated Chico's historic Bidwell Mansion, a loss profoundly felt by the community.
State Parks officials noted that investigators uncovered "clear indicators pointing to an intentional act" leading to the conclusion that the fire was arson, announced on Dec. 17.
Former Chico mayor Andrew Coolidge remarked on the significance of the Bidwell Mansion to the city, comparing its loss to that of Notre Dame in Paris, emphasizing its central role in community history.
Coolidge stated, "In a literal way, it's the center of town. It's tied to every aspect of the city. It's very traumatic," underlining the mansion's importance in Chico's identity.
