Why Japan wants its citizens to try a 4-day workweek
Briefly

The Japanese government launched a "work style reform" campaign, promoting shorter working hours and flexibility to address a significant labor shortage and improve workers’ lives.
"By realizing a society in which workers can choose from a variety of working styles... we aim to create a virtuous cycle of growth and distribution, enabling a better outlook for all workers."
As part of the effort, the labor ministry has begun providing free consulting and grants, alongside a growing library of success stories to inspire companies to adopt shorter workweeks.
Despite government support, only 8% of Japanese companies have adopted a three-day workweek, with Panasonic seeing only 150 out of 63,000 eligible employees choosing the option.
