Today's sustainability discussion has gone completely off track, having forgotten the question it was initially born to address. Instead of shedding light on the existential conundrum faced by modern capitalism-what does it take for a company to create more good than harm for the surrounding world-it hosts a pool party for big and small details somehow related to E, S, G, or another loosely associated acronym.
The question almost eludes us because it is so big: What does it mean for a company to be sustainable and have a positive overall impact in today's global economy?
This emphasis on the 'how' is an old-school ESG approach, focused on internal practices and processes. However, a more profound question is emerging, shifting the focus to the overall positive impact a company has on the world.
