Netflix to buy Warner Bros. for $72 billion DW 12/05/2025
"Netflix will acquire parts of Warner Bros. Discovery for $72 billion (84 billion), the streaming giant announced Friday. If regulators approve, the merger would unite two of the biggest names in entertainment, Netflix and Warner Bros., the studio behind "Harry Potter", "Game of Thrones" and the DC films. The combined company would control a vast library of movies and shows, from Stranger Things and Squid Game to Warner's century-old catalog."
"Warner Bros. has produced Hollywood classics such as "Casablanca" and "Citizen Kane" as well as modern blockbuster movie series "Harry Potter" and smash TV hits like "Friends," "The Sopranos" and "Game of Thrones." Netflix, on the other hand, is responsible for shows like "Stranger Things" and "Squid Game" and the film "Kpop Demon Hunters." "Together, we can give audiences more of what they love and help define the next century of storytelling," Sarandos said."
Netflix will acquire Warner Bros. Discovery assets for $72 billion, combining major film and television studios with HBO Max and HBO. The transaction would not include networks such as CNN and Discovery. The combined company would control a vast catalog spanning century-old Warner films and contemporary hits alongside Netflix originals like Stranger Things and Squid Game. Ted Sarandos said the deal pairs Warner Bros.' library with Netflix productions, and David Zaslav described the combination as joining two major storytelling companies. The deal values Warner Bros. Discovery at $27.75 per share.
