Grant Fitzner, chief economist at the ONS, said inflation "held steady" in August as "various price fluctuations offset each other" and highlighted how airfares spiked.
The 22% rise in air fares was in contrast to a 2.1% fall between July and August last year, indicating this summer’s airfare increase is significant.
Despite a slight increase in inflation, it is significantly lower than the peaks experienced during the cost of living crisis in 2022, providing some relief.
The Bank of England expects inflation to rise again later this year, particularly with household energy bills projected to increase, but not as steeply as previously.
