Mats Persson, Sweden's employment and integration minister, emphasized the urgent need for alternative job opportunities for Northvolt's employees, highlighting Sweden's unique labor market requirements.
Kim Boden, the negotiations chief at Skelleftea municipality, expressed concern over the new minimum salary for work permits, which could hinder efforts to employ Northvolt workers in local roles.
Persson noted a potential risk for non-EU workers laid off by Northvolt, stressing the importance of quickly finding them new employment to avoid them leaving Sweden.
Despite criticism of the salary threshold for work permits, Persson stated that the government aimed to protect foreign workers from exploitation while remaining open to revisiting salary discussions.
