Vibrant West Indian Day Parade showcases Brooklyn's Caribbean culture, despite tragic shooting * Brooklyn Paper

"The parade is a celebration of life, celebrating where you came from, and you know, putting on the show for everybody," said Heavyn, a parade attendee.
"This parade means everything to me as it celebrates the culture, music, and food of all Caribbean islands," said Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
"You can't beat the islands, you can't beat home, but this is really, really close to it," reflected Williams on the significance of the parade.
Today, it is hosted by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association, continuing the legacy of celebrating Caribbean culture since its inception in the 1930s.
