On January 27, 2024, the NYPD and various city and state agencies launched an extensive enforcement initiative aimed at curbing toll evasion, particularly with the implementation of Congestion Pricing. This marked the 65th such interagency operation since their collaboration began, with law enforcement positioned at key access points to Manhattan, including the Hugh Carey Tunnel. Officers were trained to handle potential dangers during stops, focusing on detecting vehicles with fake or obscured license plates. These intensified measures respond to the growing challenge of drivers attempting to avoid tolls during peak hours.
Police said they are particularly keeping their eyes peeled for drivers either using fake license plates or obscuring their plates because of the new toll.
The operation marked the 65th interagency task since 2024, focusing on preventing drivers from evading tolls such as Congestion Pricing.
