The Department of Transportation's redesign of Brooklyn Bridge's bike lane aims to separate cyclists and pedestrians, creating safer conditions for both groups at the busy exit ramp.
'Our Brooklyn Bridge bike lane represented a historic improvement for cyclists and pedestrians, directly leading to a surge in bike ridership over the span,' said agency spokesman Vin Barone.
The new design will transform the existing lane into a protected two-way bike lane, alleviating the conflicts between cyclists, cars, and pedestrians.
The Brooklyn Bridge bike lane has observed a significant rise in ridership since September 2021, with 160,659 trips recorded in August alone, indicating its popularity.
