The New York Child Data Protection Act prohibits social media companies from collecting, using, sharing, or selling children's personal data without informed parental consent, preventing data mining and safeguarding personal information from potential harm.

Assemblyman Colton highlighted that preventing data mining by social media companies will protect families by preventing the misuse of personal information, which can be targeted by malicious individuals for harmful purposes.
