DOT commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez stated, 'Microhubs will offer a more sustainable and efficient way to make deliveries... Make our streets greener and safer for all New Yorkers.'
Before the pandemic, about 40% of all deliveries in New York City were to residential consumers. Now, that number has skyrocketed to 80%, increasing environmental concerns.
Residents of neighborhoods like Red Hook have reported that the growing number of delivery trucks leads to exhaust pollution and congestion in their areas.
Last year, the city announced plans for new waterfront shipping hubs to reduce short-haul truck deliveries and promote eco-friendly options like sail freight.
