Brownsville man sentenced to prison for fatally shooting acquaintance in 2022 * Brooklyn Paper
"Today's sentence provides accountability for this defendant for escalating an argument into a shooting and taking a man's life. Gun violence is at record lows in Brooklyn and keeping defendants such as this individual off of our streets makes communities safer."
"breaking cycles of violence."
Harvey French shot and killed James Huff during a verbal argument in April 2022 near Brownsville Houses, firing between five and seven rounds. Huff suffered chest, side and leg wounds, tried to flee but was struck in the back and later died at the hospital. Police arrested French on Oct. 3, 2022, finding a large amount of crack and charging him with drug possession; he had prior arrests and was believed to be a gang member. A jury convicted him of second-degree murder and weapons possession on Oct. 17, and he was sentenced Jan. 6 to 23 years to life. Officials credited declines in Brooklyn homicides and shootings to community engagement, holding dangerous offenders accountable, and 'breaking cycles of violence.'
