The Route 30 bus was traveling down Washington Street around 5:30 p.m. when the teen - who had been leaning against a light pole - "inexplicably ran into the street and in the path of the approaching bus," Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said in a statement.
"The MBTA operator made an attempt to avoid the male but unfortunately was unable to do so," Sullivan said.
