East West Manufacturing shut down its South Boston factory, leaving around 50 Chinese American workers over 50 years old without severance pay, sparking protests and concerns about their future.
The workers, some of whom had been with the company for nearly two decades, are demanding one week of severance pay per year of service, which the company is not legally obligated to provide.
The former employees are worried about their limited unemployment insurance not lasting long enough, especially considering their age makes finding new jobs challenging in a fluctuating job market.
The closure highlights the vulnerability of older, non-English speaking workers, emphasizing the need for better protections and support for this demographic in situations like layoffs.
