Boston faces a challenging winter with significant snowfall and icy conditions, leading to over 1,200 citations issued for uncleared sidewalks in just a few days. Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized community responsibility during the winter storms, stating that property owners must clear sidewalks after snowfall. The increasing snowfall, three times more than last year, coupled with freezing temperatures, creates dangerous conditions on the streets. Violations are not exclusive to Boston, as cities like Cambridge and Brookline have also issued fines for failing to clear sidewalks, reflecting a regional issue of unsafe walkability during winter.
"We need to do a better job of this collectively," Mayor Michelle Wu said during an emergency preparedness briefing on Thursday. "It's everyone's job to be taking care of our neighborhoods."
As temperatures plummet, Wu said icy streets are making for unsafe conditions. "We have seen many instances where the storm hits and then there is a freeze... turns into a very dangerous slippery patch of ice."
