Amazon is discontinuing the feature that allows users to download Kindle books to their computers, effective February 26, 2025. This change limits user control over their purchased digital content, which, despite being paid for, remains under the vendor's licensing terms. Currently, the warning about this change is not prominently displayed, posing a risk for unaware customers. Historically, Amazon has shown a tendency to alter or remove content from users' devices, raising concerns about the true ownership of digital media.
Just as a matter of general principle, it's nice to have control over the stuff you bought and presumably own. Digital content isn't really property we own.
The only time you see this warning is if you select 'Download' from the three-dot menu next to a book. It's hidden and not clearly communicated.
