Despite hope following the Gaza ceasefire announcement on January 15, Palestinian families experienced increased arrests, including that of Ghassan Alyeean's son. The day after the ceasefire was announced, Israeli soldiers raided Alyeean's home and detained his son, who was about to take exams. Monitoring organizations report that over 95 Palestinians were arrested shortly before the ceasefire began, illustrating the continuing struggles Palestinians face under Israeli occupation, which includes expanding settlements and human rights abuses.
"There was no way to defend him or my family. We are not saboteurs," Alyeean said, expressing the helplessness felt by his family amidst the arrests.
"Since the announcement of the Gaza ceasefire, Israel has arrested at least 95 Palestinians in raids and at checkpoints for no clear reasons," said Jenna Abu Hasna.
"The mass incarceration of Palestinians is just one feature of Israel's illegal occupation of the West Bank, which also involves expanding illegal Israeli settlements," according to rights groups.
"The situation we are living through is really difficult right now. We are treated as slaves or even less than slaves," Alyeean lamented.
