Labour investment in cycling and walking will be unprecedented, says Louise Haigh
Briefly

Louise Haigh stressed the importance of investing in cycling and walking, stating, 'We're in a climate crisis. We're in a public health crisis; getting people walking and cycling and moving more are essential to solving both of those in the immediate term and in the long term.' She highlighted that safe cycle routes could significantly reduce GP appointments by incorporating physical activity into daily life.
'Transport is the largest single contributor to the UK's carbon emissions,' Haigh explained. She clarified that improving access to cycling routes is essential for tackling the carbon footprint while addressing health issues, noting evidence suggesting that such initiatives could lead to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, fewer GP appointments each year.
Haigh pointed out the need for a national integrated transport strategy, stating, 'Almost three-quarters of trips in England are less than five miles.' She emphasized that with long-term funding settlements, the quality and consistency of transport networks, especially cycling and walking routes, can be significantly improved.
The secretary of transport acknowledged historic funding challenges, saying, 'Historically, cycle routes, unlike roads and rail, have had little to no multi-year funding settlements. This has left substantial gaps in the quality and coverage of routes.' She argued that strategic planning and sustained funding are crucial for developing effective cycling networks.
