Eddwin Cortes-Pinerez, a 40-year-old Colombian national, was sentenced to 19 months in prison for a series of sexual assaults on five women over three weeks. Using his bicycle, he approached victims unexpectedly from behind, grabbed their buttocks, and fled quickly, making identification difficult for the victims. The court heard distressing accounts, including one victim who was injured while pursuing him. Despite initially claiming the acts were pranks, Cortes-Pinerez ultimately pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault. He has been in custody since July 30, 2022, and is banned from cycling.
The offences are part of a pattern of offending with a consistent modus operandi where he would use a bicycle to approach lone women.
One of the victims was seriously injured when she fell over as she ran after him to take his photo, while another experienced a panic attack.
Cortes-Pinerez, who claimed these were pranks, later pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault.
