Foto Arsenal Wien, Austria's first dedicated centre for photographic images and lens-based media, is set to open on March 21 within a historic military complex. Led by Felix Hoffmann, the former director of C/O Berlin, the centre will operate as a hub for contemporary photography, presenting up to ten exhibitions annually. The project is backed by the city government and is associated with Kunsthalle Wien. Hoffmann's previous curatorial success and the centre's unique approach seek to broaden the narratives surrounding photography, celebrating both local and international voices in the art form.
"We will not be a traditional institution, but more of a hub, or a melting pot," says Hoffmann, emphasizing the innovative approach of Foto Arsenal Wien.
Hoffmann highlights the city's long-standing legacy as a hotbed for radical art, pointing out that Vienna's artistic influence spans centuries.
