BIG Unveils Timber-Structured Design for the New Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen
Briefly

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has been tasked with the design of the new Hungarian Natural History Museum located in Debrecen, on a former sports ground near the Great Forest. This 23,000 m² museum will replace the existing facility in Budapest, aiming to position Debrecen as a regional educational and cultural hub by 2030. The design features three overlapping timber ribbons that integrate with the surrounding forest, creating open plazas and accessible areas for public engagement. The building includes exhibition halls and educational facilities, promoting a seamless connection between the interior and the natural environment.
The new Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen, designed by BIG, aims to blend architectural innovation with the natural landscape, fostering cultural and educational growth.
Our design is conceived as an intersection of paths and lineages... a manmade hill in a forest clearing; geometrically clear yet softly organic - an appropriate home for the wonders of the natural world.
