New Churches St. Luke & St. Matthew / Meixner Schluter Wendt
Briefly

The architectural project aims to expand an existing ensemble housing a childcare facility and the Church of St. Luke, introducing a new church square, parish hall, and outer church. The design appreciates the transition from past to present, allowing users to reconcile with their history while engaging with modern structures. The site, extending from west to east, creates an intentional flow and invites community interaction with public spaces. The outer church serves as a flexible intermediary space, emphasizing ongoing processes and future possibilities in the urban environment.
The site extends, as if along a timeline, from west to east, starting with the childcare center and the existing church and moving into the new parish hall.
The outer church, as a constructed intermediate state, can be read ambivalently as half-open/half-closed, depicting a process and suggesting a realm of possibilities.
The new church square connects the parish hall with the existing church, encouraging social gatherings and facilitating easy dispersal for visitors.
This combination of old and new builds reflects the necessity for users to bid farewell to the past while trying to make the new their own.
