The move opens the door for Ozzie Albies to be activated from the injured list on Friday before the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians.
Fletcher will likely reject the assignment and go looking for a major league deal, but could return if he doesn't find one to his liking.
The original hope was that Albies would be back in two weeks, but he seems ready to be activated on the first eligible day. Brian Snitker believed Albies could have played sooner.
