The World Science Fiction Convention (WorldCon) in Seattle faced backlash after Kathy Bond announced the use of AI to vet over 1,300 panelists for the event. The AI, utilizing a ChatGPT prompt, was meant to streamline the vetting process by gathering background information on applicants. Bond emphasized that only names were entered into the AI system, and outputs were scrutinized by team members. However, concerns regarding the implications of using AI in such contexts highlight a divide within the sci-fi community.
"We understand that members of our community have very reasonable concerns and strong opinions about using LLMs," Bond wrote.
"no data other than a proposed panelist's name has been put into the LLM script."
"The sole purpose of using the LLM was to streamline the online search process used for program participant vetting."
"Scandals include but are not limited to homophobia, transphobia, racism, harassment, sexual misconduct, sexism, fraud."
