Why Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman Is Playing the Long Game on AI
Briefly

AWS has placed a significant focus on artificial intelligence (AI) under Matt Garman's leadership since he assumed the CEO role. With a history in AI services, AWS launched Amazon Bedrock, providing access to advanced models. Garman detailed strategic shifts at a recent conference, including the introduction of Nova, a new generation of AI models, and the construction of a powerful AI supercomputer in collaboration with Anthropic. He emphasized the excitement around generative AI following the emergence of ChatGPT and the ongoing commitment to balance technology advancements with environmental targets.
When you took over at AWS in June, there was a perception that Amazon had fallen behind somewhat in the AI race. What have your strategic priorities been for the business over the past few months? We've had a long history of doing AI inside of AWS, and in fact, most of the most popular AI services that folks use, like SageMaker, for the last decade have all been built on AWS.
With generative AI we started to really lean in, and particularly when ChatGPT came out, I think everybody was excited about that, and it sparked everyone's imagination.
At its re:Invent conference in Las Vegas in December, AWS made a series of announcements, including a new generation of foundation AI models, called Nova.
This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity, highlighting Garman's perspective on AI progress and safety, as well as energy and emissions strategies.
