""How is digital technology shaping the human soul?,""
""We as humanity are excellent at creating different tools that support our lives,""
""our lives longer, but not always making our lives the happiest, the most fulfilling,""
"The ChatGPT group demonstrated "much less brain activity.""
The Public Culture Project aims to place humanist thinking at the center of contemporary technological debates. Tools across history have extended lives without always increasing fulfillment. Generative AI, exemplified by ChatGPT, can lower active cognitive engagement and create similar outputs across users. An EEG study of 54 students compared writing with ChatGPT, internet search, and unaided cognition on topics that did not require prior knowledge. The ChatGPT group exhibited markedly reduced brain activity and produced homogenized essays that emphasized career choices as determinants of happiness. These findings raise concerns about the psychological effects of AI-assisted creative work.
