In a pioneering first, St. Paul's Lutheran church in Finland hosted a church service primarily crafted by artificial intelligence, featuring AI-generated sermons, music, and visuals. Over 120 attendees were present, including foreign guests, indicating a strong community interest. Despite the novelty, participants noted a lack of emotional connection compared to traditional services, with clergy affirming the necessity of human warmth in worship. This event showcases the current capabilities of AI in religious settings and the ongoing exploration of its potential impact on faith communities.
It was the first church service in Finland put together mostly by AI tools, which wrote the sermons and some of the songs, composed the music and created the visuals.
The Rev. Petja Kopperoinen expressed that the future of AI in church services is now, stating, 'AI can do all those things that people think that it can maybe do in 10 years or so.'
Though the AI service was entertaining, worshippers like Taru Nieminen felt it lacked the personal connection, saying, 'It felt distant. I didn't feel like they were talking to me.'
