Job openings for software engineers have dropped over one-third in five years, reaching the lowest levels in a decade according to Indeed data. The decrease is largely attributed to AI advancements that enhance productivity, as noted by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, who suggested the company may halt hiring engineers in 2025. While demand for skilled tech workers is projected to rise by 2033, concerns linger among job seekers about AI's potential to replace roles traditionally held by junior engineers. The stark contrast in job availability from the pandemic peaks underscores the shifting landscape in tech employment.
"We have seen such incredible productivity gains because of the agents that work side by side with our engineers," Benioff said on the "The Logan Bartlett Show" podcast in January.
"There was a lot of panic. I had a lot of friends of mine who messaged me and said, 'Hey, am I going to lose my job?'" Jesal Gadhia commented on the impact of AI on job security for software engineers.
