At the TIME100 Davos Dinner, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, discussed the future of AI amidst concerns about wealth concentration akin to the 19th century. He emphasized the need to define the real limits of AI technology, diverging from notions of Artificial General Intelligence. Amodei warned that without proper intervention, the impact of AI could significantly exacerbate wealth inequality, drawing parallels to historical figures like John Rockefeller. The conversation reflects a broader urgency to address fundamental questions about the societal challenges posed by rapidly advancing technologies.
We have to be very serious about when this actually happens, what is possible and what exists. What are the bounds that are provided by physics, by the limits in human institutions.
We're probably hitting similar levels of wealth concentration as we had in the mid-to-late 19th century. And I do have a concern that, without intervention, AI will make that even more extreme.
