A study conducted by PhD student Aidan Toner-Rodgers at MIT revealed that AI tools can significantly enhance scientific discoveries, aiding teams in increasing their output of materials.
The research found that teams using a custom machine-learning tool produced 44% more discoveries and filed 39% more patent applications compared to those without the tool.
Interestingly, the impact of the AI tool varied among researchers; for the top-performing third, productivity doubled, whereas the bottom third saw little improvement.
This disparity emphasizes that while AI can mask productivity gaps, it may also widen them, primarily benefiting those already excelling in their fields.
