Something big "might" be happening
"Recently, there's an essay making the rounds called "Something Big Is Happening" by Matt Shumer. It's basically an urgent, high-stakes "weather report" from the AI frontlines, where he claimed that we've reached a point where AI has developed the ability to replace most screen-based work. When my manager showed me this article, I felt a sense of fear initially because of the way it was written and how it confirmed my doubts as a designer living in the age of AI."
"I've rebuilt my design portfolio using Next.js, v0, and I've even published several web apps using Vibe coding tools like Lovable, Cursor, Replit, Vibecode App, and Firebase Studios. The end products produced by these text prompt AI tools were astonishing, and they definitely pushed the limits of what is capable from a design to product perspective. The question is, IF I'm able to do all this using a text prompt, is there really a need for a " designer "? Am I on the chopping block?"
AI has developed the ability to replace most screen-based work. A designer experienced fear upon encountering that claim. The designer rebuilt a portfolio using Next.js v0 and published several web apps using Vibe coding tools such as Lovable, Cursor, Replit, Vibecode App, and Firebase Studios. The end products produced by text-prompt AI tools were astonishing and pushed the limits of what is possible from a design-to-product perspective. The designer now questions whether a separate designer role is necessary when complex outputs can be generated from a text prompt and worries about job displacement.
