OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, codenamed Orion, which is its largest AI model to date. Trained with unparalleled computing power and data, the model will be accessible to ChatGPT Pro subscribers and API developers, while other users can expect access shortly after. Although GPT-4.5 shows increased capabilities, especially in knowledge and emotional intelligence, it exemplifies that scaling may have diminishing returns compared to emerging models from competitors. OpenAI is also reassessing the long-term sustainability of GPT-4.5 due to its high operational costs.
"We’re sharing GPT‐4.5 as a research preview to better understand its strengths and limitations," said OpenAI in a blog post.
GPT-4.5 represents OpenAI's largest model yet, trained with unprecedented computing power and data, but the company does not consider it a frontier model.
