The NYU Tandon researchers developed an AI system capable of generating novel Connections puzzles that rival NY Times'. Participants found AI puzzles more enjoyable and challenging than human-designed ones.
Researchers prompted GPT-4 through smaller steps to play different roles in creating puzzles. One user study showed that AI-generated puzzles were preferred over official Times puzzles for being more creative and challenging.
