Klarna CEO says firm will likely reduce its workforce by 1,000 employees by 2030-partially due to AI
"Siemiatkowski made the comments on the 20 VC podcast with Harry Stebbings earlier this week, where the CEO didn't deny that the company has been steadily shrinking. The CEO said that currently the company has about 3,000 employees. That's down from 7,000 just four years ago. In another four, he says there will likely be less than 2,000-a reduction of one-third. Klarna currently employs roughly 3,000 people, down from 7,000 four years ago, and expects fewer than 2,000 employees in another four years. The company is not replacing employees who leave and credits AI integration for reducing staffing needs. This workforce reduction is happening despite growing consumer adoption of buy now, pay later services, with surveys showing around 30% of Americans have used BNPL and 35% plan to increase use. BNPL enables shoppers to split purchases into interest-free installments, pay within 30 days, or choose longer-term financing. Concerns about AI risks include loss of autonomy, misuse for destruction, and powerful AI as a major security threat.
