Butler's artwork has undergone a radical transformation in inspiration while still relying heavily on photography. She begins her process with photographs that resonate with her, often sketches them into line drawings, serving as patterns for her quilt designs. Over the last two decades, she primarily sourced vintage photographs, focusing on the stories of anonymous individuals or famous historical figures. Recently, she has shifted towards engaging with living photographers, influenced by the historical contexts and events witnessed during the pandemic, allowing her to explore contemporary narratives through her work.
"I could not do my work without photographs," she says, emphasizing the role of photography as a vital element in her creative process.
The process remains the same, though the sources have shifted in a way that Butler considers fundamental, including a new interest in living photographers.
