How Time evaluates and vets AI tools
Briefly

Time is rigorously assessing AI tools suitable for improving efficiency and audience engagement, emphasizing the importance of not using company data for training. CTO Burhan Hamid highlighted the need for internal legal review of data protections and checking the viability of AI companies. Despite the fast-paced AI evolution presenting risks, he's pursuing partnerships with established firms while experimenting with smaller startups. He acknowledged employee concerns about job security but stressed the importance of harnessing AI effectively in the workplace.
If the AI tool uses Time's data to train its models, that's a dealbreaker, according to Hamid, who spoke at the Digiday Publishing Summit in Vail, Colorado, on Wednesday.
It's tough right now, Hamid said. The space is moving so fast that if you slow down to assess risk for everything, you’re never going to get anything done.
