A recent survey by Wiley, involving nearly 5,000 researchers across 70+ countries, indicates that the acceptance of AI tools in academic publishing will surge over the next two years. Many researchers believe generative AI can outperform human abilities in various tasks such as manuscript preparation and peer review. Over half of respondents see AI becoming mainstream in 34 out of 43 identified use cases. Experts highlight the urgency for stakeholders in academia to address the implications of this technology now, as it is poised to reshape scientific research and publishing significantly.
What really stands out is the imminence of this, says Sebastian Porsdam Mann at the University of Copenhagen, who studies the practicalities and ethics of using generative AI in research.
There's broad acceptance that AI is going to reshape the research field, says Josh Jarrett, senior vice-president and general manager of the publisher's AI growth team.
