A recent working paper by economists Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard examined the impact of generative AI chatbots on the labor market in Denmark, analyzing data from 25,000 workers across 11 occupations. Contrary to fears that AI might depress wages and job availability, the study found that the chatbots had minimal effects on both earnings and recorded hours. This raises concerns for tech companies investing heavily in AI infrastructure without seeing corresponding economic benefits from these technologies, even as adoption rates accelerate.
AI chatbots have had no significant impact on earnings or recorded hours in any occupation.
The adoption of these chatbots has been remarkably fast... but then when we look at the economic outcomes, it really has not moved the needle.
